I wrote the previous entry in the Student Learning Center on Thursday afternoon while Hurrican Ivan was lumbering through the city. Just as I posted it Athens's emergency sirens began to sound. Moments later, they announced over the PA system that a tornado had touched down within ten miles of Athens and we were all to evacuate to the first floor of the building. I got my things and calmly joined the throng of people on the stairs, fanning out across the first floor and trying to find friends via by sight or cell phone. Eventually we were all herded into a classroom and the Weather Channel was put on the screen. I never really became worried or scared, but the desire did arise in me quite clearly for a cell phone. If I was in a serious emergency there are a lot of people I'd want to talk to. I still can't stand the things, but it might make sense to break down and get one, "just in case." |
